Belchamps Scout Centre is managed by Castle Point, Crouch Valley, Southend Estuary and Southend West districts. Located in Hawkwell, near Hockley, the site is made up of 30 acres of pasture and woodland, and is adjacent to 360 acres of public woodland.
There are over 20 campsites and 6 buildings to choose from, meaning the site is suitable for activities all year round. There are hot showers and toilet blocks with hot & cold water hand basins, as well as disabled facilities. The site also has a shop which stocks all scout uniform, books, record cards, gifts, souvenirs and sweets. It also carries various items of camping gear, including mugs, mini torches, whistles, compasses, mantles, and single gas burners. There is an industrial washing machine and tumble dryer available. Belchamps can also hire marquees, tables and chairs. Alternatively, you can hire a ready made campsite. Turn up, and find a marquee, cooking equipment, tables, chairs and patrol tents all ready for you.
The campsite has a resident manager and staff. First aid facilities are available on site and Southend Hospital has an emergency department. There is also a doctor in the village. London is just 50 minutes away by train and Southend 10 minutes, both with three trains an hour.
Six buildings are available, as well as the camping sites.
Pack Holiday Centre
The Pack Holiday Centre currently sleeps 56 people in dormitories, and has 2 dedicated toilets. The dormitories are heated via coin operated heating (£1). The kitchen is fully equipped, with two 6 ring gas cookers, a fridge, a freezer, a microwave and two sinks with hot and cold water. Cooking equipment and kitchen utensils are provided, along with crockery and cutlery. The large dining room has an open fire place, or you can use the coin operated heating (£1). The dining room has tables and chairs for up to 70 people, and can also be used as an indoor activity area, useful in wet weather. The Pack Holiday Centre is situated adjacent to the Male and Female toilet and shower facilities.
Kath Batts
Kath Batts is a modern brick building, sleeping 24 people. There is a single sex dormitory for 20, that doubles as a dining and living room with a fire place for an open fire, and two 2 bedded leaders' rooms with hot showers. There is also 2 bathrooms, with showers and toilets, and a dedicated disabled toilet and access ramp. The fully equipped kitchen comprises a 6 ring gas cooker, a microwave, a fridge and a freezer (all electricity is operated from a £1 coin meter). Cooking equipment, kitchen utensils, crockery and cutlery are provided for 30 people, so that you can accommodate guests.
The Hutch & Den
The Hutch is a basic hut that has a sleeping / storage room, with a kitchen area next door. The kitchen has a gas cooker, fridge-freezer and a sink, with cold running water. No kitchen utensils or crockery are provided in this building. The Den is a separate hut for sleeping accommodation or storage. Between them, there is sleeping space for 14. The Hutch has electric heaters for the winter and both huts have bunks with thin foam mattresses. Electricity is provided by a coin operated meter. The Hutch and Den are situated in their own field, known as The Warren, giving you plenty of space for camping and outdoor activities.
The Coop
The Coop is a wooden building, made up of a small kitchen area, a hall for dining or sleeping using our 12 camp beds, and a leaders room with 2 sets of bunks (4 persons). The kitchen has a new domestic electric cooker, a fridge-freezer and a sink with running cold water. The building electric heaters, so is useable all year round. The Coop building is situated at the edge of the Coop campsite, which is automatically booked with the building, so you can camp too.
Guide Cabin
Situated on Lower Guide Corner, we now have guide cabin open. With 3 bunks, and a kitchen/dining area this building provides an ideal base for camps or a complete solution for small patrol camps. The kitchen comes complete with a fridge/freezer, 3-ring gas burner and cold running water. There are pots, pans and utensils to cater for up to 40 and a table and chairs and plates, knives and forks etc for 6. The cabin comes with Lower Guide Corner camping area.
Vincent Lodge
A 42 bed wooden bunk house, with 2 x 10 beds, 2 x 8 beds 1 x 4 bed and 1 x 2 bed, kitchen, dining area, covered veranda and garden area. The kitchen comes complete with pots and pans to cater for 42, plates, knives and forks etc for 42, 6 ring catering cooker with oven, toaster, fridge, freezer and electric kettles. There are tables and chairs for 42.
Activities
Onsite activities include archery, air rifles, climbing, abseiling, table tennis, pedal karts, pioneering, circus skills, uni-hoc, hikes, wide games, 5-A-Side football, BMX Bikes, Trampolines, HIGH ROPES COURSE, Traversing Wall, Assault course and more
Between May and September the site offers a campfire on Saturday evenings.
Local Attractions
Belchamps is about 6 miles away from Southend-on-Sea, which has a range of attractions, such as the longest pleasure pier in the world, amusement arcades and the Kursaal. The local swimming pool is about 5 minutes walk away, and boating activities on tidal waters can be arranged. Other local attractions include Karting, Horse riding and Laser Quest.
