Southend West District is an amalgamation of Leigh-on-Sea District and Westcliff District which took place in September 2004.
The Southend West District extends from the Southend Borough Boundary in the West (adjoining Castle Point District), Southend–on-Sea in the East (adjoining Southend Estuary District), the River Thames in the South with Southend Airport and Eastwood in the North (adjoining Crouch Valley District)
The District is made up of 16 Scout Groups, 2 Explorer Units and 2 Fellowships.
The 2007 Census shows that we have:
Beavers 158
Cub Scouts 283
Scouts 198
Explorer Scouts 68
Fellowship 39
Leaders and other adults 73
Of the16 Scout Groups, three are Sea Scout groups (two of which are Admiralty recognised). All three Sea Scout Groups have excellent waterfront facilities and are fully equipped for the training of all young people. Two of the Groups have full disabled facilities.
The Southend West District is a member of the ‘Four Districts’ responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of Belchamps Camp Site in Hawkwell.
Each year a regatta is held in Leigh Old Town the proceeds of which benefit Scouting and an ‘outside’ Charity which varies annually. The next Leigh Old Town Regatta is to be held in September.
