What is the Event?
It is more than a walk in the Countryside! Starting out from a designated location, those taking part have to navigate to Prances Campsite. Along the way there will be questions to find the answers to and\or incidents to tackle. Points will be awarded for the answers to the questions and how successful the teams are at the Incidents. For a peek at what the event is about take a look at the photos from the 2010 events here or watch a short video on YouTube
When is the Event?
It will be on Saturday 12th May 2012, starting in the morning. Those taking part have the option of camping overnight if they wish.
Who is it for?
This is for the Scout Section only. Teams may consist of a maximum six Scouts and a minimum of four Scouts. If team members have to drop out along the route and the event staff deem that the number remaining in the team is unsafe to continue the team will be pulled out. Leaders are permitted to walk with teams if they wish. There will be two classes - Leader Guided (must be over 18) and Independent.
Is there a limit to the amount of teams that can enter?
Yes. Unfortunately for logistic and safety reasons we have decided to limit the total amount of teams (Leader Guided and Independent) to 40 teams. In 2010, 38 teams took part which was just about manageable. Allowing up to 40 means everyone will have a good experience and be able to enjoy the event.
What Paper Work do I need?
Please complete the booking form and send to the address with a fee of £30 per team. You will then be emailed or posted the paperwork you will require for the day. (Don’t forget that Leaders will need to get parental permission for their Scouts to take part).
What does the fee cover?
The event fee covers the cost of the use of the start point, campsite and building facilities and the BBQ in the evening. It also includes an OS Map of the area, but you may also wish to provide your own so you have more than one copy.
Food
Those taking part should carry with them food and drink for the duration of the hike. Saturday evening there will be a BBQ where all those that took part will be entitled to a free Burger and can of drink. You will be given a voucher to exchange for these. There maybe the option to purchase additional food at the BBQ if there is any spare after everyone has had their freebie. Breakfast is not provided. The campsite does not allow open fires so for those staying over night it is advisable to bring small cooking stoves. These could be carried on the hike or brought to site by leaders.
Evening Activity
In the evening, there will be a ‘Entertainment’ in the main hall so you can just put your feet up and relax after a day walking.
Can I camp?
Yes, you can camp on site (there is NO additional fee for this). You can carry your tents with you on the hike, or leaders can arrange to drop them to you later in the day. Those camping overnight will need a Leader with a N.A. Permit with them - the event organisers and staff will not be responsible for those staying overnight on site.
Can I help as Staff?
Yes of course you can. If you would like to volunteer to help on the day please email us at morethanawalk@essexscouts.org.uk.
