Job Description for Essex Experience Volunteers
What is the role of a volunteer?
a. Act as a mentor to the young people:
- Be available to listen to and talk to the young people.
- Guide the young people through the activities.
- Encourage the young people to take part in all the activities.
- Lead by example; take part in all the activities yourself and show plenty of enthusiasm.
- Help the young people get the most out of the weekend.
- Be a positive role model.
b. Run a few simple games or sports activities if the weather turns bad or the young people are waiting between activities.
c. Help to ensure the safety of the young people:
- Ensure that the young people are under control and following the safety rules applicable to each activity.
- Participate in a roster system that provides adult supervision in the sub-camps at all times.
- Encourage the personal safety of young people, e.g. not to smoke in the tents.
d. Have fun and make the most of your experience.
What help and support will I get?
- A five-day training course prior to the Essex Experience weekend that will equip you with the skills necessary to mentor the young people.
- A support staff who will take care of all the accommodation, catering and administrative arrangements.
- A First Aid team to assist with all medical and welfare issues.
- Advice and practical support from the Training Team throughout the weekend.
Who will I be working with?
- 150 young people from Essex aged between 12 and 15.
- 30 + other volunteers from local authorities and businesses across Essex.
- A large team of support staff from Essex Scouts and other voluntary organisations.
