One thing to keep in mind is whatever picture you use it'll get squished down to 64 x 64 pixels so use small pictures to begin with, big things like photos will loose some quality thats all.
To edit your avatar...
1) Go to My Controls found at the top right corner of your screen.
2) Next click on the
Edit Avatar SettingsOn this screen there are several options, each of which I'll explain here...
Option 1 - Choose one of the Base Gallery avatars;
On the right theres a bit that says "Choose an avatar from one of our galleries" with Base Gallery in a white box. Next to this is a box that says "Go!". Click this box.
This will load a screen with numerous little pics on it, such as
, 
, 
for example. When you've found one you like click the little DOT underneath it and click the "Use Selected Avatar" at the bottom of the page.
This will take you back to your control panel with your new avatar showing.
Thats it! Now, on with your posting!
Option 2 - Choose one of your own avatars;
Perhaps you want to use a picture that isnt in the base gallery above. In order to do this you first need to know WHERE on the internet the picture you want to use is stored.
If you can see the picture you like, right click it and choose Properties.
On this screen will be a Address (URL), this is what you need to highlight and then right click and choose Copy, then OK out of that screen.
Back in your control panel (from above) on the Avatar page there's a bit that reads Enter a URL to an online avatar image with a white box next to it. Its this white box where you need to right click and click paste.
Then click Update Avatar at the bottom
This will refresh the screen with your new avatar showing.

Option 3 - Upload a new image from your computer type avatar;
Pretty much the same as Option 2 but click on "Browse..." and click around your pic for the file you're wanting to use. I cant really advise much on this as I dont know your structure but imaging you're attaching something to an email, its the same method. When you've found the pic you want click the Open button.
Then click Update Avatar at the bottom
This will refresh the screen with your new avatar showing.
