has anoyone got one of those flashy beacon things to put on their tent?
are they any good?
can you buy them on their own or do you ahve to buy a tent that already has one on?
it is just because i can never find my tent and it has been known for me to get into the wrong one in the dark which sometimes causes a bit of confusion.

I have seen them but no idea where you get them from. sorry. Maybe they get them from festivals etc.

I think I know what you are talking about and if i am right, I have seen them in fishing shops, designed to put on the end of the rod so you know when you've caught a fish!

It's perfectly possible using a second mobile phone and a bit of electronics - but not that simple.....

A more basic idea would be to use a remote control system (like a car alarm remote) that turns on your beacon e.g. Maplin Electronics

A much cheaper option would be something distinctive on your tent - or a large flag next to it !

but the problem is with the darkness, i am sure i will think of a cheaper solution, thanks anyways guys.

how about a set of led lights of glow sticks on a big flag pole nr your tent or if you have power i have the perrfect way????????????????

Tie one end of a piece of string to your tent and the other end to your wrist. You'll always be able to find your way back then.... problem solved! I'm full of such great ideas! cool.gif

but somebody is bound to find it highly amusing (and rightly so!) to move the flashy beacon thing so you'll walk into a strangers tent anyway!
Shortie
why not get those glow in the dark guy ropes?

But the glowsticks are good, just take one for each night and hang inside your tent, they really show up from the outside and then they won't go walkies from it either. wink.gif

yeh i can GUARANTEE you that they WILL get "lost" or "misplaced"....lol

yeh i have seen an article on them in the paper the other day. They are a small (probably only 1 or 2-man) tent with a beacon on top and you text a special number from your mobile and it lights up. You get them from orange ( the phone company) but it might be a bit useless if everyone has one. ha. ha. But if its too late to get one you could always get a massive flag or something to stick by your tent or paint it white but that idea prob. not too practical.

I had this thought a few months ago. I came up with the idea of solar powered garden lights. Homebase had them on offer - sumthin like 2 for £10. Well they were tested on our network annual camp and worked fine outside the tent. They come with spikes, but if you could hoist them up ontop of yer tent then they could do the trick. The newer ones are a white light, rather than yellow, and seem much brighter.

I'm taking mine and will have them outside during the day to charge (or maybee on top of the cyber cafe marquee where i can keep an eye on them). But i think i'll move them just inside the door or somewhere less "portable" ;-) in the evening, if ya get the idea.

If a flashing beacon is bright enough to keep me awake at night I will remove it and switch it off. You might get it back.... dry.gif

Why? At the 1996 event I had the misfortune of camping on the staff field near some radio enthusiasts who had a flashy thing at the top of their tall radio mast and insisted it had to be there to warn off low flying aircraft even though the tree behind their tent was taller.
They said "We're talking to groups around the world all thru the night"
We (me and other neighbours) said "Not with that bloody stupid light blinking all night you ain't!" mad.gif

Anyways.... as for finding your tent, how about something likeTHIS, when you get to your subcamp, press the remote and the tent lights up!

Yes. I have one of those. You can get a similar one from Marks and Spencer's right now (of all places !)
