Active Support Members Right On Target

Network Fellowship

Last month members of Stanford-le-Hope & District Scout Active Support Unit took part in the David Clare Archery Competition. The day saw the members take part in a number of archery challenges including shooting through woodland and bushes at targets partly obscured as well as the more conventional target practice on an open range.

Lesley and Dave Ward from the Stanford-le-Hope & District Active Support Unit took part in a Scouting activity that they are normally encouraging the young people to have a go at.

The event was the David Clare Archery Competition held at Prances Campsite in Wickham Bishops.

Lesley Ward, Scout Active Support member said; “Being a total Novice we weren’t sure how the day would unfold.  On arrival we were allocated an instructor and along with a Scout Network member the three of us were shown how to shoot at a target both with and without a sight on the bow.  Luckily the three of us were of similar ability and were all at least able to hit the target.  After lunch we were put into larger groups and taken into the wooded area of the site to shoot at targets around trees and through bushes.  We felt like modern day Robin Hoods!”

Later in the day the participants returned to the Archery Range for their scoring to count followed by a competition to get the arrow closest to the flag.

Scout Active Support member, Dave Ward added; “Aiming at the flag meant we had to aim up into the air.  My first arrow went past the flag and across the field, landing just short of the campsite boundary!  After that we realised that you didn’t need to pull the string quite so far back.”

Both members have said what an excellent day they had and are looking forward to attending again next year.
