The Scouts in Hatfield Forest are heading for some exciting times following the appointment of their new District Commissioner Liz Craig. Liz has been involved with Scouting from the age of 16, most recently volunteering as an Assistant Beaver Scout Leader with Henham & Elsenham Scout Group. Liz Craig said “I’m really excited about taking on this challenging role. Some people think it’s all about paper work, but I am looking forward to still working with the most important people in Scouting – the young people.”
The news of the Appointment comes only a few months after Liz was selected to help the International Service Team at the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden next year. Attending the Jamboree is an opportunity of a lifetime for Liz and the other UK adult volunteers selected. Not only will they get to meet 30,000 people from nearly every country in the world - and share their knowledge and experiences whilst working towards greater international understanding - this Jamboree offers them the chance to learn new skills that they can use in other aspects of their life.
Liz added; “I am really looking forward to working with adults from other countries, and meeting young people from round the world. Only Scouting can provide the opportunity to represent your Country and enable you to meet such a variety of people.”
Hatfield Forest Scout District is made up of 11 Groups across the Dunmow and West Essex area which bring fun and adventurous activities to nearly 500 young people. Liz will be managing these Groups to ensure that even more young people can take part in the wide variety of activities. Liz will also be providing support and leadership for the 100 adult volunteers who share the passion of supporting young people.
After being congratulated on her appointment by the Essex County Commissioner, Jan Dear, Liz paid tribute to the hard work put in by the previous District Commissioner, Sandra Arnold and added that she hoped to build on the successes the District has had over the past years.
