3rd Brentwood Cub Scouts have embraced The Essex Challenge 2010 since the beginning! They have eagerly awaited the challenges set each month by the County’s Youth Programme Team. 15 Cub Scouts spent a night in a cardboard box and raised money for charities supporting homeless people In February the Cub Scouts enjoyed a Mexican evening hosted by a ‘real’ Mexican woman and smashed a ‘Piñata’ full of sweets but the July challenge was the best yet!
15 Cub Scouts spent the night in a cardboard box in the garden of the Group Scout Leader. Their only utensils were a plastic mug and a plastic spoon.
The Cub Pack of 20 Cub Scouts were given £1 each at the end of May to use their entrepreneurial skills to raise as much money as they could for a homeless charity and to raise money for their own food for the night, but they also did some ‘busking’ around the camp fire which ensured that they had as much water as they could drink: sausage, chips and a butty for supper (in a paper bag) and soup (in a mug) and a roll at bed time…..10pm ….but most of them did not settle until about 1.30am and then the early risers were up at 5.30am !!
For Breakfast they had cereal and milk (in a mug) and a Bacon Butty (Vegetarians 0ptions were available overnight)
The Cubs flattened the boxes for recycling, left the garden tidy (did a proper sweep) and went off on a hike carrying all their equipment on one of the hottest days so far this summer, so they would really, really know what it is like to have to take everything that they own with them all of the time.
The Cubs raised almost £190 through their efforts, £2 per person was spent on food and the remaining amount will be divided between a local charity and St Mungo’s (London)
With permission from the parents, St Mungo’s will publish photos on their website, their publicity person was very impressed for making young children aware of the problem of homelessness, so everyone taking part got a St Mungo key ring!
Breda Bower Group Scout Leader, 3rd Brentwood Scout Group said "Thanks to, Jane CSL, Suzy ACSL. Chris YL. James, Group Chair Person, Sheila, Scout helper who did the cooking, all of them were available all night to look after our young people, without whom this adventure would not have been possible."
