Scouts from Essex will be pedalling down to the Redbridge Cycle Centre on Sunday 7th March to take part in a day of cycling events on and off road. Opened by London Mayor Boris Johnson in 2008, as part of the 2012 Olympic legacy, the purpose built cycle centre at Redbridge offers both a road circuit and a mountain bike track with a large descent section as well as berms, jumps and a 'pump track'.
Last year Essex Scouts took part mostly off road, however this year it’s hoped to use all the facilities including both on and off road race circuits.
Scouts of all ages will be taking part in the event from six year old Beaver Scouts to adult Leaders in different events throughout the day.
Scout, Amber Halil, of 1st Hallingbury Scout Group, said “Being part of the Scouts is great, because we get to do great challenging activities every month throughout the year.”
Daniel Large, Scout Leader from Billericay commented that it is brilliant that the 2012 Olympics are already benefitting the young people in the surrounding area. “Last year I was unable to take part as I was snowboarding, but mountain biking is also one of my passions so I’m really looking forward to my race.”
The annual event, called TRACKS, will see nearly 200 Scouts taking to the saddle and it is just a small part of the many varied outdoor challenging activities that the Scouts take part in. Other activities Scouts from Essex will be taking part in over the year will include zorbing, canoeing, hiking, and rafting.
