Good Practice - Media Development Top Tips

Explorers Network Adult Fellowship

Here's a quick video demonstrating some top tips for generating local media coverage prepared by the County Media Team, including how to promote the everyday adventure of Scouting.

1) Have a story to tell – Stories can be made around a fun, adventurous or challenging activity.

2) Maximising the coverage from any event – Plan what coverage you need from the event ie; newsletter? / website? / local press? / radio? / TV? / pictures for Scout Hall wall?

3) Work out a story hook – you will find it easier to have something to pin your story around, not just the fact that the event is taking place.

4) Get on brand pictures - every picture tells a thousand words.  For more tips about taking good pictures, see the Photo Top Tips.

5) Think of the type of quotes needed for the press release – you may need to prompt the subjects to say the lines you need for the press release.

6) Find out the direct contact for the reports – Generic contacts work, but direct contact is much better.

7) Keep giving your media outlets lots of content to use - Eventually they will start to use it as they know you can supply the goods.

8) Thank the reporter/journalist - if your story is used, ask for a copy.

9) Share your story – pass it around, send copies to the County MDM and other people in your District.

10) If you get stuck, just ask! - The media team are always here to help.
