Facts about Scouting in Essex
- Our County membership of 17,830 members includes 3,500 Beaver Scouts (6-8 year olds),
5,600 Cub Scouts (8-11 year olds) 3,000 Scouts (10-141/2
year olds) over 1,000 Explorer Scouts (14 - 18 year
olds) and over 1,000 Scout Network members ( up to
25 year old).
- There are about 340 Scout Groups
in Essex covering every community of the county.
- Scouting in Essex is supported
by over 3,500 adult volunteers. That equates to nearly
£4 million of youth work hours per year in Essex.
- 1 in 4 young people in Essex
become Scouting members as youngsters and we retain
an average of 1 in 10 of the population.
- An estimate put the value
on Scout property in Essex at over £8,000,000.
These premises need regular maintenance and fund raising
by Groups and Districts for this and all other Scouting
activities, raises something like £1,000,000
per year!
- Scouting within Essex has a
Group to every 5,000 of the population, one of the
best averages in the UK!
- Over 9,000 Scouts and Guides
will be taking part in an international Jamboree at Kirby-le-Soken
in the summer of 2008 making it the biggest ever county Jamboree in the UK and follows the 40,000 who attended the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Chelmsford, Essex in 2007.
- Over 1,700 members travelled
to 22 countries around the world during Scouting activities
in the last three years including trips to Australia,
the United States and Japan.
