If you are completely new to scouting, you may have been approached by a Leader to undertake a particular role. For all roles within the Scout Association you will require some kind of training specific to the role. As a minimum this will be Module 1, Essential information

If you have agreed to take on a Warranted position within scouting you will be given a provisional appointment. This lasts for a maximum of five months during which time you will receive the first phase of your training and support you need to be able to perform your chosen role.

Soon (if you haven’t already done so you will be asked to meet with the appointments sub-committee in your District or County. They are responsible for ensuring that you (any everyone else!) are suitable to undertake a role in Scouting and are in the right role for you.

Starting your Training; Getting started

When you get your provisional Appointment you will also start your training. The first part of this is called Getting Started. This requires you to complete a number of modules aimed at introducing you to your new role and planning for the future.

Module 1, Essential Information

This module contains basic information that all adults involved in Scouting need to know. You need to complete it within three months of your provisional appointment being made.

Module 2, Personal Learning Plan

This enables you to create your own training plan to meet your needs and will take your existing knowledge and skills into account. This needs to be completed within five months of your provisional appointment being made. You will then need to complete either Module 3 or 4 depending on your role.

Module 3, Tools for the Job (Section Leaders)

This contains basic information about the job, and practical help for working within a section. This needs to be completed within five months of your provisional appointment being made.

Module 4, Tools for the Job (Managers)

This module contains the basic information on the responsibilities of the job, and practical help for making a start. This needs to be completed within five months of your provision; an appointment being made.

You will then need to put the learning from each module into practice. This is sometimes referred to as Validation. Validation could be an observation by another leader, written evidence, a photograph or just talking to your Training Adviser about what you have done. The module is then signed off as having been completed and in due course you will receive a certificate of completion from The Scout Association

When you have completed the requirements for Getting Started, and your appointment has been confirmed, you will receive recognition of your full appointment.

To find out where the next Getting Started course is being run and see all of the traingin events in the calendar, click here or the 'Training Events in the Calendar' link on the information bar at the side of any training page. This will list all the events that are taking place, when and where.

If you choose to complete the learning for these modules via distance learning, the appropriate media will be sent to you. Your Local Training Manager will have the details.

To book on an event, click on the event that you wish to attend, you will then need to print the form to complete it with your details. This should then be sent together with the course fee to the course administrator. The details of who to send it to will be printed at the bottom of the application form. .

Meeting your Training Adviser

Different Districts work in different ways, but either before you begin getting started or shortly afterwards you will meet with your Training Adviser who will explain the training scheme in more detail

The Training Adviser’s job is to help you identify which of the modules you need to complete and then decide with you whether you need to complete any training for them. Between you, you will complete a personal learning plan. Further information on the modules requirements can be found in the information section, together with copies of Personal Learning Plans.
