Aims
The Essex County Webteam aims to support all levels of Scouting in Essex by providing and maintain the Essex County Scouts web site. The main aims of the website are:
- Communicate relevant information
- Promote Scouting both internally and externally
- Provide resources and support to all members in the County
Alongside the main website, we also provide and maintain the Essex Scouts Forums and Email Lists. The forums provide a means for all members over 14 years of age to communicate and discuss any relevant Scouting matter with fellow Scouts. The email lists provide a means to distribute information to and give adults in Scouting a means to contact others around the County. The email lists differ from the forum in being private and open to subscribers only.
In addition to everything above the County Webteam can also help with training for adults in the facilities offered by the team, and IT support and advice.

The Story
In November 2004 the webteam got together to discuss a new way forward for maintaining the Essex Scouts website. There were many new ideas and methods put forward, and it was decided that it would be best to completely restructure the site and went about designing and implementing the new design and all the clever behind-the-scenes technical bits.
Since then we have developed from scratch a new site design navigation, with a consistent and easy-to-use look throughout the site. A lot of work was also put into developing custom-made calendar system to meet the varied requirements of different roles, teams, and sections throughout Essex.
The Web Team
The website is very much a team effort. This website and related services are brought to you by: Adam, Ash, Graham, Gwilym, Julian, Justin, Martin, Matt, Paul, Pete, Phil, Robin, Ryan and Simon.
We are always looking for new members of the team willing to help out. Note that you don't need to be a super-geek - a lot of the work is simply writing and updating the information, or for example just answering questions on the forums, or helping to keep the calendar up to date - very little technical expertise required!
At the moment, we are particularly looking for:
- php programmers - we have lots of ideas on new things to add to the site, but we've got a bit of a backlog in writing the clever behind-the-scenes technical bits. If you are a php programmer with some time to spare, please get in touch!
- editors - responsible people with good writing skills, with a willingness to chase down the correct information and answers for the website and forums. Its as much or as little as you want to make it (some of our team look after whole sections of the website, others simply help by moderating and answering questions on the forum, testing new bits, and spotting spelling mistakes and other errors).
Feedback
We are always interested in any feedback or new ideas for the website. Please use our feedback form to contact us.
