We are a County Team but are always looking to recruit new members to support County Events, such as Mega Camp, Beaver Fun Days, Essex Weekend and Jamborees. With EIJ2020 on the horizon we need to be actively looking to increase the numbers of our team so we can put on the Epic Display of green & white on the range. Essex Weekend is a fun filled weekend for Scouters and their families to attend either as part of their Scout Group or as individual families to take part in a relaxing social weekend and also have the opportunity to take part in various activities as a family which is not normally possible when you organising a camp for your young people.
Although the weekend is a self catered event there is a café running during the weekend. Alongside this you can enjoy a variety of activities, pampering sessions ( why not treat yourself to foot massage), camp fire, social activities in the evening as well as the opportunity to meet some of the County Activity teams and the County Stores team.
Essex Weekend is now in its 6th year and is once again booked at Skreens Park on the 13th – 15th May 2016.

Tickets are now on sale for It’s a Date 2016, the famous variety show performed by the Southend Scout and Guide Gang Show. The bi-annual variety show is returning to the Palace Theatre from Wednesday 17th till Saturday 20th February 2016 and the gang are looking to put on another memorable performance.
With adult tickets on sale from £13.50, children £9.50 and a special Family ticket (2x Adults & 2x Children) priced at £40, It’s a Date provides fantastic entertainment for the whole family. With over 60 Scouts and Guides from the Southend area the show will feature plenty of fun and laughter. 2016 represents the 50th year of Southend Gang Show and the 25th performance of It’s a Date, this show is certainly going to be one to remember.
Josh Hales, a member of the cast of Southend Gang Show said “Rehearsals have been going really well and everyone’s very excited about getting to the Palace Theatre for the first performance on 17th February. We can’t wait to perform in front of a packed house and put on a good show for all.”

Activities Policy Organisation and Rules Update January 2015
Every year the Scout HQ Activities staff carry out reviews of different activities to ensure that the provision to young people is carried out, and overseen in the safest possible way, the changes ensure that the Association keeps up to date with current best practice as laid out by the National Governing Bodies for the different activities we undertake.
In January 2015 the Scout Association published a number of updates to POR and various activities factsheets.
A number of updates to POR Chapter 9 in January include:
Rule 9.7 this rule has been updated in a number of areas, including
Archery is now an adventurous activity
Permits must have an expiry date of no more than 5 years
If a young person holds a permit when they turn 18 their permit will expire – the safeguarding module is required to be completed where the permit can be re granted. The new permit can last no longer that 5 years form the initial assessment
First aid requirements are now included –first aid provision much be provided within a group while carrying out an adventurous actiivity (to a level specified in POR)
There is a period between January and December 2015 where Archery permits are not required, Archery must still be run in accordance with the September 2014 version of POR however after December 2015 Archery will become an activity where a permit is required
Rule 9.8 Clarification that where a group contains a participant under the age of 18 all normal Scout Rules apply.
Rule 9.22 This rule has been updated and covers the rules previously 9.22, 9.23, 9.24 and 9.25, there is a period between January 2015 and March 2016 where the September version of POR still applies, at the discretion of the County Commissioner
Rule 9.36 Archery is now listed as a permitted activity. The use of crossbows is covered under Rule 9.37

Rule 9.43 buoyancy aid checking is now the responsibility of the permit holder, not the county of district that owns the equipment as in the September version of POR
Rule 9.44 section c has been removed – no areas can be classed ‘training water’ there is a grace period for this rule until December 2015, following this date any waters classified ‘training waters’ will no longer be classified as such,
Rule 9.46 a number of changes to how boats are to be checked and identification required for various uses.

Belchamps has a great range of events over the coming Scouting year with something for every section. We are trying to offer leaders some great easy additions to their programme.
Kicking off in September with some 24 hour sleepovers a great easy way to get the section together for and overnight event. In October we have our first ever Jamboree on the Air where you can talk to other Scouts from around the world followed by our creepy camping weekend when the centre turns eerie.
In November it’s the annual Firework display with 2 displays this year one for the younger children with less bangs and the main one with our usual 20 minutes of spectacular fireworks. There is also the giant Bonfire and some fabulous light shows from Pluto jugglers.
In December we have our annual Christmas sleepovers and the fun spectacular day on the last weekend before Christmas with the centre lit up in its normal winter wonderland.
In January and February its 2 nights for the price of one on all of our buildings, with badge weekend in January and Winter Camp in February, its a busy couple of month.
March see’s more Sleepovers plus Mud Mania; the new tough mud style challenge. We’ve got lots of training courses running in March and April too, including rifle shooting, Archery, campfire leaders and Fencing. And in April its the second year of Survive Belchamps.

The Great Big Essex Expo 2015
Our flagship support event for Section Leaders and their teams in Essex is back! The Great Big Essex Expo 2015 will be taking place at The University of Essex at Wivenhoe Park in Colchester. Be inspired, be informed, be prepared…for Sunday 18th October 2015.
Hannah Kentish, UK Youth Commissioner, will be joining us during the day to share with us more about how we make scouting more youth shaped as part of our Scouting for All Strategy.
The Great Big Essex Expo will feature special sessions for volunteers from each of the five youth programme sections – giving Leaders the chance to soak up some new ideas for weekly meetings and camps as well as meet other Leaders and share ideas and experiences.
There will also be an opportunity to choose from a variety of different workshops to inspire, inform, prepare and help Leaders in their roles.
We hope to cover the following workshop sessions:
Leaders of the future: developing our Young Leaders
The future of ‘Youth-shaped’ Scouting: listening to and working with young people’s ideas
Parent Power! Recruiting and working with parents
Scouting Skills Exchange: sharing and learning something new

Diversity & Inclusion: how we can be more inclusive in Scouting

The day will also feature exhibition stands from the County’s activity and support teams, as well as main activity centres, who can help with programme planning. Lots of freebies will be available for Leaders to take away to assist them in their roles.
All attendees will receive a complimentary goodie bag filled with useful tools and resources, a t-shirt as well as evidence of completing Ongoing Learning.
