Thorrington is located in the north-east of Essex, just 7 miles outside of the historic town of Colchester. It is well situated to explore the south-east of the uk, with quick access to local transportation.
The campsite came into scouting hands in 1938, with facilities consisting of a large hut and small toilet block fed from water hand pumped from a well; drinking water came from a spring and there was no electricity.
Although the site has been continuously developing over the years, it has been maintained as a traditional camping site, so wherever possible campsites are excluded from each other. This is to allow individual camping styles to be learned.
Thorrington is made up of 27 acres of woodland, containing 14 sites and 2 buildings. The sites vary in size, from a few hike tents, to a dozen patrol tents. Campers are welcome to book several sites if they wish to spread out, or maybe can’t get onto one of the larger sites.
There are also two buildings available. One sleeps 48 in bunk rooms, (shower and toilets in building), the other sleeps 38 in bunk rooms and a dormitory (night toilet facility in building). Both are capable of taking disabled residents, and are suitable for pack holidays. Each building is centrally heated, has a multi purpose main hall, and a fully equipped kitchen.
The site providore stocks a good selection of sweets, drinks, souvenirs, and a few useful camping items. These include things such as cutlery, crockery, tooth brushes & tooth paste, soap, and some other items. Bread and milk can be ordered in advance. Opening times can be arranged with the duty warden.
The nearby coast area can be used for all water activities and visits. The historic town of Colchester is seven miles away, and can be reached using the local bus service.
