The Big Essex Expo is back!

The Great Big Essex Expo 2015

Our flagship support event for Section Leaders and their teams in Essex is back! The Great Big Essex Expo 2015 will be taking place at The University of Essex at Wivenhoe Park in Colchester. Be inspired, be informed, be prepared…for Sunday 18th October 2015.

Hannah Kentish, UK Youth Commissioner, will be joining us during the day to share with us more about how we make scouting more youth shaped as part of our Scouting for All Strategy.

The Great Big Essex Expo will feature special sessions for volunteers from each of the five youth programme sections – giving Leaders the chance to soak up some new ideas for weekly meetings and camps as well as meet other Leaders and share ideas and experiences.

There will also be an opportunity to choose from a variety of different workshops to inspire, inform, prepare and help Leaders in their roles.

We hope to cover the following workshop sessions:

Leaders of the future: developing our Young Leaders

The future of ‘Youth-shaped’ Scouting: listening to and working with young people’s ideas

Parent Power! Recruiting and working with parents

Scouting Skills Exchange: sharing and learning something new

Leading your leadership team to success

Nights away and visits abroad: sharing ideas and best practice

A million hands: local community involvement

Diversity & Inclusion: how we can be more inclusive in Scouting

Sharing your adventures: how to communicate the stories from your Scouting adventures

The day will also feature exhibition stands from the County’s activity and support teams, as well as main activity centres, who can help with programme planning. Lots of freebies will be available for Leaders to take away to assist them in their roles.

All attendees will receive a complimentary goodie bag filled with useful tools and resources, a t-shirt as well as evidence of completing Ongoing Learning.

Visit the event page to book your place: https://essexscoutsexpo.eventbrite.co.uk

We have a limited number of places available so we are encouraging people to book early so as to avoid disappointment.

The Youth Programme Team are currently working hard to make this day a success for everyone and we welcome any feedback, comments or ideas that you have about this event.

The event is being co-ordinated by the County Youth Programme Team. Please feel free to contact the team if you have any queries – expo@essexscouts.org.uk

Adventures Offshore announce exciting Round Britain voyage for 2015

Adventures Offshore – Essex Scouts’ offshore sailing activity team – are proud to announce their exciting 2015 summer programme.

In July & August of next year, the two yachts, Ocean Scout & Offshore Scout, will be embarking on a tour around Britain, visiting (almost) every corner of the UK (taking a short-cut through the Caledonian Canal), as well as nipping over to Ireland, Alderney and France. The boats will be visiting places they’ve either never been to before, or haven’t been to in many years, so this is a rare opportunity to get involved in a really special voyage.

The trip has been split into 7 legs, each exploring a roughly 200-300 mile section of the UK coastline during a week long voyage, which will allow plenty of time to stop off at different places and thoroughly explore the coast. There will be crew changes in Ipswich, Edinburgh, Inverness, Belfast, Milford Haven, Plymouth and the Solent.

Target age range is Explorers & Network (adults are welcome too) and that could be individual or group bookings. Any of the trips could be used as a QSA/DoE residential experience. No prior sailing experience is required, but equally these are good “mile-builders” for anyone looking to progress their existing skills. Each leg is priced at

Offshore Scout sets sail on an international adventure

Essex Scout’s offshore sailing team, Adventures Offshore, have embarked on an eight week international voyage which will see them visit ports in at least six European countries.

Offshore Scout, one of two identical 49 foot yachts carrying up to eleven crew plus three volunteer instructors, departed Ipswich on 4 July on the first leg of the trip which will take in the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Latvia and Denmark.

The voyage is broken down into chunks of 7-10 days, with a different crew sailing each leg. Around 60 different crew, mostly young people, are expected to participate, with many counting their adventure as the Queens Scout or Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award residential experience and working towards their RYA Competent Crew qualification.

At the end of July, there will be another crew change in Riga, where Offshore Scout will join the rest of the Tall Ships Race fleet. Before racing to Szczecin, crew will be able to mingle with thousands of other young people from across Europe and beyond on other sail training vessels, and experience some of the in port activities laid on by host ports. Regular updates will be posted to the Adventures Offshore facebook and twitter pages throughout the summer programme.

Offshore Scout eventually returns to the UK on 26 August, where she will join her sister ship, Ocean Scout, in Ipswich for the rest of the 2013 season. Adventures Offshore still have a limited number of vacancies for evening and weekend bookings in September and October. For those looking further ahead, the 2014 programme has recently been announced and this includes many more opportunities for evening and weekend sailing. During summer 2014, Adventures Offshore will be operating a varied and exciting programme utilising their two boats to offer the full Tall Ships Race programme alongside a series of weeklong voyages between the UK and Holland.

For more information about the opportunities available, visit the website, email sailing@adventuresoffshore.co.uk or call 01206 385071.
