Ford employees supporting Riffhams Activity Centre

A team of a dozen Ford employees carried out a number of service projects over two days at the King Edward VIII campsite (Riffhams) in September.

Despite one day of torrential rain, the enthusiastic and motivated team of volunteers completed many projects to ensure the Activity Centre continues to be a fantastic resource for local Scouting.

Improvements included:

  • New fencing to secure the site and also around the pond area.
  • Cutting back bushes to clear new paths around the site.
  • Painting the buildings, fences and bridges so they can withstand many more ‘British Summers’ to come!

Activity Centres from all around Essex have benefited from the support of different companies. If you have a project at your Scout Centre or Activity Centre why not engage with some local business to see if you can work together?

BeaconThis year marks the 70th anniversary of VE Day and to commemerate this a beacon at King Edward VIII Scout Park (Riffhams) was lit.

Members from across Chelmsford District and local branches of the Royal British Legion were welcomed by Site Manager, Nigel Wood to witness the beacon being lit and remember events that happened 70 years ago.

Following the reading of The Tribute, which mentioned the part played during the War by Scouts and Guides, the Beacon was lit by Mrs Joyce Kirby and Major David Swann, Essex County President, Royal British Legion.

Roger Cole presented with Silver Wolf by Malcolm Treacher

Following a memorial service at Riffhams campsite for Pat Deavin the former DC of Chelmsford District, Malcolm Treacher (President of Chelmsford District) presented Roger Cole with the Silver Wolf.

After the presentation Roger said –

“I started my Scouting in 1948 as a wolf cub in Gloucestershire and then joined the 22nd Cyprus Group (British Scouts Overseas) when the family moved to Famagusta in 1952. I became a leader in 1972 and so Scouting has been very much part of my life and will continue to be so. Helping so many young people has truly been a privilege and whilst it’s an honour to have received this award I must acknowledge that I have also thoroughly enjoyed working with so many like-minded adults over the past 40 years.”
