County Leaders Skills Weekend

Following the feedback received from Essex Scouts Leaders in early summer this year, the Youth Programme Team will be running a Leader Skills Training event.
The dates of this event are 12th – 14th October 2018 at Thorrington Scout Campsite.
The event will be an opportunity to not only learn and develop your basic Scouting skills, but also an opportunity to network with other like minded leaders from across the county.
Training sessions will run from 9am on Saturday morning to 12:45pm on Sunday, with the opportunity to take part in up to 6 sessions.
The Youth Programme Team will be subsidising the weekend, with the only cost to participants being food. Meals can be selected on the form at a cost of £3 per meal, with a £2 supplement for the cheese and wine tasting element of Saturday’s meal. Bookings will not be considered confirmed until payment for your place has been made.

County Backpack 2018- Bookings now open

As featured in Scouting Magazine, County Backpack is a two day incident hike around the local countryside. Scouts will need to visit as many bases as possible each day, before returning back to Thorrington Scout Campsite. Each base will have a small activity to complete before moving on to the next base.
Teams will need to attend a compulsory base at the start of the day and will then work out their own route, all bases will be manned and will have an activity and a route card to complete before moving to the next base.
Each team must consist of 4-6 Scouts (all of Scout age) and must be able to walk with a lightweight rucksack, teams will not need to carry tents or cooking stoves, but will need lunch and equipment for a day hike.

Thorrington

Thorrington is located in the north-east of Essex, just 7 miles outside of the historic town of Colchester. It is well situated to explore the south-east of the uk, with quick access to local transportation.

The campsite came into scouting hands in 1938, with facilities consisting of a large hut and small toilet block fed from water hand pumped from a well; drinking water came from a spring and there was no electricity.

Although the site has been continuously developing over the years, it has been maintained as a traditional camping site, so wherever possible campsites are excluded from each other. This is to allow individual camping styles to be learned.

Thorrington is made up of 27 acres of woodland, containing 14 sites and 2 buildings. The sites vary in size, from a few hike tents, to a dozen patrol tents. Campers are welcome to book several sites if they wish to spread out, or maybe can’t get onto one of the larger sites.

There are also two buildings available. One sleeps 48 in bunk rooms, (shower and toilets in building), the other sleeps 38 in bunk rooms and a dormitory (night toilet facility in building). Both are capable of taking disabled residents, and are suitable for pack holidays. Each building is centrally heated, has a multi purpose main hall, and a fully equipped kitchen.

The site providore stocks a good selection of sweets, drinks, souvenirs, and a few useful camping items. These include things such as cutlery, crockery, tooth brushes & tooth paste, soap, and some other items. Bread and milk can be ordered in advance. Opening times can be arranged with the duty warden.

The nearby coast area can be used for all water activities and visits. The historic town of Colchester is seven miles away, and can be reached using the local bus service.

17th Colchester Celebrate Christmas and 80 years of Scouting

An Around the world in 80 days theme was the setting for 17th Colchester Sea Scout Group’s annual Christmas Weekend at Thorrington Scout Campsite.

With over 80 young people joining together in a variety of activities across the day, team work and fun were the main aim. Whilst the Cubs and Beavers spent the morning indoors creating global themed craft, the Scouts and Explorer Scouts made their very own trains (chariots) to race later in the day.

A warming lunch was served and the mixture of young people from across the sections mixing together and laughing, it was fantastic to see the spirit of Scouting ripple across the room.
In the afternoon the trains (chariots) were raced, cheered on by the Beavers and Cubs.
