County Marathon, a fun filled test of strength and character for Explorer Scouts, Network members and all adult Volunteers is back this year at Peter Watson Campsite, Gradbach, Derbyshire.
Held on the weekend of 30th September – 2nd October, this event entails a two day incident hike where teams can put there skills to the test and compete for one of our six trophies.
This fantastic event is an excellent way to develop your skills and get back into the great outdoors with your friends. Teams of four – six will travel across the countryside taking part in a variety of activities at check points along the way during the weekend.

Essex Scouts also need your support to run the event, so even if you feel your walking days are behind you or just fancy challenging others you are welcome to join us as event staff.

Last month, Team Essex announced James Hopkins as our new Transformation Lead – and now it is time to build the transformation team!
As we drive forward our Skills for Life Strategy through to 2025, we’ll be embarking on a positive and engaging period of change. To do that, we’re looking to recruit a diverse team to support the Transformation Lead in delivering the forthcoming changes over the next three years.
Are you a change-maker? Naturally positive self-starter? Have an interest or experience in delivering change, project management or communications? Then the transformation team could be the place for you. We’re seeking adult volunteers from all walks of life with a range of experience and age – you don’t even have to currently be involved in Scouting
There are six roles we’re recruiting initially – with a brief role description included for each team member:
This is our starting point – the transformation team will adapt, change and grow over time, fitting to the needs of the next series of changes.
If you are interested in applying, please complete our form (Click Here) by Thursday 30 June. We will be shortlisting and interviewing during the application period – so don’t hold-off applying until the deadline.
As we drive forward our Skills for Life Strategy through to 2025, the Scouts are embarking on a positive and engaging period of change. We want to continue offering high quality, safe and engaging programmes to our 16,000+ young people.
In doing that, we must continue to be a vibrant, forward-thinking movement, adapting to the needs of our ever changing society. We want to reach more young people, be more diverse and make it easier than ever to volunteer for Scouts in Essex.
To achieve our strategy, Team Essex are excited to announce James Hopkins as our new Transformation Lead!
In the new role, James is responsible for leading, planning and implementing the Skills for Life strategy in Essex and will be building a transformation team during Summer 2022 to make this happen. With a professional background in change and project management, and prior experience in Scouting as a leader, GSL and DC, James is looking forward to working with the thousands of adult volunteers we have in Essex to make Scouting locally even better.
Our new transformation team will work alongside our existing structures – so we can continue great Scouting whilst starting to deliver one of our key aims – to improve the volunteer experience – so that we can attract and retain more volunteers.
Within this, there are four identified key areas to focus on as a start:
– A warmer welcome for everyone
– Simplifying how we volunteer together
– Digital transformation: more support to help get everyday things done
– A more engaging learning experience
There is more that can be done to improve things further – like better rewards and recognition – but we can’t change everything at once. This is a three year programme delivered in bitesize chunks.
More information will be shared from Autumn 2022 onwards. If you have any questions at any point about the transformation programme, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
The County People Team provides and supports mediation services across Essex Scouts. We’re looking to develop this part of our work by appointing an Assistant County Commissioner – Mediation.
Mediation is a powerful tool that we use to resolve issues, disputes, disagreements and complaints. Giving individuals the space to have good conversations often leads to them resolving long-standing concerns that are getting in the way of delivering good Scouting to young people.
As ACC – Mediation you’ll have the opportunity to develop and support a team of mediators. You’ll be instrumental in creating a mediation training programme for our managers and leaders so that they can do it for themselves. In the long term we’d like to develop mediation skills training for young people too.
We’re looking for individuals who already have mediation experience in either a work or volunteering environment. You’ll also need to show that you have the time and energy to take on and develop this role.
Scout Network is our youth section for 18-25 year olds. It allows young people to continue their youth programme beyond 18, giving them the opportunity to complete their Queens Scout Award, Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards and the Explorer Belt.
It’s also a great way for those moving away from home to continue their Scouting with other like minded people.
We’re looking for someone to lead this part of the youth programme for the County. As Assistant County Commissioner – Scout Network, you’ll be part of the Youth Programme Team responsible for nurturing and developing Networks in our Districts along with the local Network Commissioners.
On Saturday 26th February ’22 Scout Pride Essex ASU were pleased to attend 2022 Southend Winter Pride at St Marks Church Southend yesterday. St Mark’s, is the home to 10th Southend Scout Group, where every leader is a member of the ASU.
In total 14 members of the ASU, from across Essex, attended the event to provide support. In fact, we had so many uniformed leaders in attendance that one of the Pride organisers commented on how many of us there were. This is Scouting. Inclusive and supporting.
The ASU has formed an excellent team who are ready for the summer program of Pride and County events.
We were also pleased to welcome the Southend Estuary District Commissioner Andrew Lewin who has also joined the ASU. Andrew, who took over the role in August, is looking forward to being involved in the ASU as we attend and support community events in Southend.
Jack Day – Unit Coordinator said “This year was the first year that we attended a pride event as an Active Support Unit, it was so heart warming to see how many Scouters, both adults and young people, came to show their support for inclusive scouting, this was the most volunteers we had seen at Winter Pride since we started to attend as Scouts”
Two years ago, we attended the Southend Winter Pride and just a few weeks later the world went into an unprecedented lockdown. And as the world stopped, Scouting had to adapt but it never stopped.
This year, we are looking forward to a full program of Pride events throughout Essex, to supporting our members, attending County and District Scouting events, and being with our Scout family. For information about joining Scout Pride Essex ASU, please contact our Membership Coordinator Mattie Day email@example.com
Network Gathering is one of the biggest national Scout Network events, taking place each year over the Easter bank holiday in the Lake District.
Earlier in January, James and Lee led an information session over Zoom about Gathering for some of the local Networks –
“We’ve had a lot of new people age into Network over the last couple years while events couldn’t go ahead and I didn’t want anyone to miss out on having such a great experience.” – James
There’s lots of activities and places to explore during the day and fun entertainment running late into the evening. Anyone can attend in Scouting that is aged 18 to 25 or has a role related to Network. Those who are older can also attend as staff.
