On 1 January 2012 PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd) and PRS (Performing Rights Society), who represent the interests of different music copyright holders, launched a joint licence scheme.

This scheme will affect all premises owned or used by Scouting where music is used, as they will now all require a new PPL and PRS licence. Owners who fail to obtain a licence may be in breach of copyright and be subject to prosecution.

The Scout Association is actively engaging with PPL and PRS jointly with GGUK to seek greater clarification on the implications and scope of the licensing scheme, and to lobby against what may be unnecessary fees and charges for voluntary groups operating for the benefit of their communities.
