Take a pile of dry ropes and poles, a some water from the River Colne and you get fun and adventures at the Colchester Estuary Raft Races.

Even though it was a dry, but none too bright a start, the obligatory safety briefing the teams was followed by a morning of building rafts.

With enough gear for 16, common sense prevailed and most took on a realistic shape except one, so tiny, it was as long as it was wide and proved later, during races, to be good for going round in circles and tipping over.
