Last month saw the return of large County Events with the return of County Backpack, the Scout Section Incident hike located, this year at Thorrington Scout Camp Site. The event see’s Scouts walking with maps and writing route cards between 24 manned bases and completing a simple task to score points, Teams of 4-6 scouts entering in 2 categories Experience & Novice and for those scouts that struggled we had an section called Assisted which saw scouts walking with a leader/Young Leader. 3 of the 24 bases were set up in local Scout HQ and were cooking bases, the scouts needed to complete their Expedition Award to gain the Chief Scout Gold Award, one of these tasks was to cook a simple meal on a lightweight stove.
In all 500 Scouts, Leaders & YL took part in the event, the event times were 9.00-17.00 & 8.00-1300, including the clocks going forward. Over the weekend 568 base visits were completed, the most visited base was Echo base, 44 troops took part with 79 teams from all around the county.
My thanks go to BEAST ASU who again took on the massive task of doing central catering for 90% of the participants, also to all the Leaders who brought the troops along as well as all the leaders sitting out on the bases.
The winners for the Novice section saw Spitfire from Braintree & the Experience section saw 12th Clacton Adventures.
Next year the event returns to Thriftwood Scout Campsite 24th – 26th March 2023
