The Essex County Scouts Archery Team (ECSAT) was established in 1984 for the Essex Jamboree by David Clare. Although he had provided archery teams prior to this, they disbanded after each Jamboree and then 4 years later a new team formed. David wanted to keep the team running between Jamborees.

In 1995 David successfully organised an archery team to provide archery at the World Jamboree in Holland. This was quite unique as we were the only activity team to be made up entirely of UK Scouts and Guides.

Sadly, shortly after this, David’s wife Doreen died, followed a couple of week’s later by David himself. David had a vision to allow Scouts and Guides to participate in, and most importantly enjoy, archery regardless of ability or indeed any disability. This is a philosophy which the team still hold.

Each year we hold a David Clare Competition, where the winner of the David Clare Memorial Trophy, is awarded to the participant who we feel has gained the most out of the experience, not necessarily the highest scores.

The Team, now, is run by a committee, and headed at present by the chairman/manager Elaine Gunn. We provide archery as an activity for a variety of Scouting and Guiding events and all members of the team are trained, by the team, to GB Archery Award leaders level  (Grand National Archery Society) (at present, having the GB qualification itself is optional). We are looking to having regular team training and shooting events, maybe once every few months, in order that new members receive training and older members skills are refreshed, and it will be chance for the team to meet up socially. We also have County Assessors on the team who assist with the archery permits across the County.

So this year, to mark our 35th year. we are holding our annual David Clare Competition at Cherrywood Campsite, Thurrock from 9am to 4.30pm. It’s a whole day event, of which in the morning you will be coached one on one in different disciplines of archery which include Olympic, Field and Clout. After lunch the competition begins and the day will finish with certificates, medals and the DC trophy being presented, plus additional celebrity medals to mark our Coral/Jade year! It’s open to all abilities and only our equipment will be used to ensure a level playing ground. The event is open to Scouts, Explorers, Network and Leaders. The event cost is £8, to book a place please email
