Hundreds of scout adult volunteers have taken over a Chelmsford school to learn new skills and prepare themselves

Just over 400 volunteer adults from all across Essex, spent part of their weekend learning new skills to help them deliver scouting in their local groups. The Scout Association’s adult training scheme provides volunteers with valuable skills, which don’t just help with the Scouts, but also develops personal CV’s and opens up new job opportunities too.

Cara Bruce, from 41st Epping Forest Scout Group said “I feel very supportive within my Group. If I need support with anything I know I only need to ask and it’s there.”

Lavina Snook added “I have learnt a lot which I can take back to my Beaver Scout section, which is very good.”

Meanwhile Elaine Smith, from 6th Billericay Scout Group, commented “Leadership skills are very helpful, and I will be back for some more support and training, it helps me feel prepared for Scouting.”

Jan Dear, the head volunteer for Essex Scouts added; “For new volunteers they get to see the support that is available to them within Essex. Everyone also gets the opportunity to network with other volunteers with different backgrounds which means that they can share experiences and ideas.”

25th Chelmsford Scout Group leader, Angela Goleby, said “it’s nice to know you’re not on your own when you volunteer with the Scouts. It’s brilliant! In my troop we have recently be working on their creative challenge badge and we have a night hike planned for the next few weeks which will end in Chelmsford.”

Phoenix Scout Network Leader, Neil Ashurst observed, “as a leader I’m very supported by the other volunteers in my area. This weekend’s training has also made me see how easy I can make the volunteering locally.”

Scouts have so many different opportunities to volunteer, not all of the volunteering has to be with young people either. There are many roles in adult training, admin and specialist skills instructors, all of which we can provide training for.
