Essex County Council is about to start lateral flow testing for Covid-19 at two sites in Basildon and Harlow.

Two further sites are likely to follow in Brentwood and Epping Forest. Members of the public will be able to book a test and each test site will take up to 60 people an hour. People take the test and 30 minutes later get the result. The test centers are due to open next week.

We, along with other community groups, have been asked to trawl for volunteers to assist with non clinical duties around reception and queue management.
Volunteers can come from any part of the county. You will be trained, an hour on line, by Essex County Council and then be asked to volunteer for a 4 hour shift. At the start of the shift you will be issued with PPE and be tested themselves, The role will include performing reception and queue management duties. All volunteers will receive an attendance allowance for each shift that they do.

Essex Scouts plan to form two pools of volunteers; one for Harlow and one for Basildon. Each pool will have a coordinator. Volunteers will register with that coordinator The coordinator will pass on the training links (when known) and then receive requests for volunteers and pass these requests on to members of the pool Those in the pool will be asked to volunteer for a vacant shift (a shift is 4 hours) and there will be about 3-6 volunteers (not just from Scouts) on each shift.

The expected duties are

  • Welcome Desk
    • Greet subjects at arrival
    • Provide instructions on what to expect with taking the LFT
    • Provide test kits and directions to privacy booth
  • Registration
    • Provides guidance on for online registration
    • Ensures all subjects are registered
  • Queue Management
    • Ensure social distancing is maintained
Volunteers will be required to commit to a whole shift and ideally more than 1 day, this will help build experience and efficiency of the testing process.
