The county Mountain Activity Team are offering a winter walking experience to Explorer Scouts, Scout Network members and Leaders in the Lake District, 1 – 3 February 2013. Hopefully there will be some snow and ice to practice techniques on – last year we had so much snow, we even got snowed in at the Youth Hostel!

Who is the weekend for?

Any member of the Scout Association, over the age of 14.

(Note: Scouts between the ages of 14 and 18 must be with an Adult Leader who will be responsible for them when not on the hill.)

The weekend comprises two options:

WINTER EXPERIENCE COURSE (Minimum age 14)

For people with some summer mountaineering experience, who like the idea of walking in winter conditions (hopefully snow and ice) – learning to use ice axes and crampons.

There will be ample opportunity to learn navigation and mountain craft skills whether there is snow or not

SNOW & ICE TECHNIQUES COURSE (Minimum age 18)

This concentrate on the technical side of winter mountaineering using ropework and alpine techniques to include crevasse rescue (simulated of course – this is the English Lakes!), climbing and belaying, and mixed ground movement.
